The Battery Dance Company kicked off its annual Battery Dance Festival this weekend at Robert F. Wagner Park, which will continue through August 20 at Wagner Park before concluding at Pace University on August 21. The Battery Dance Festival is New York City’s longest-running dance festival and the company is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
Attendees will be able to take in the beautiful views of the New York Harbor, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty while they are mesmerized by a repertoire of international dance performances by companies from around the world.The program covers a broad range of styles, including classical ballet, post-modern, Indian classical and Afro-Cuban.
Since Aug. 15 was India’s Independence Day, performances began with the Erasing Borders Festival of Indian Dance, organized by the Indo-American Arts Council. Other highlights of the festival include a premiere by the Battery Dance Company, as well as New York debuts for Polish Dance Theater, Sankofa Danzafro of Colombia and Ingun Bjornsgaard Prosjekt of Norway.
The Battery Dance Festival 2015 is made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and Public Funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council.
