BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on for June!
– Right On Cue: New pool tables are out in the park along the North Esplanade. Come rack ’em up!
– Making A Splash: Children’s water play features will be turned on this month.
– Rainbow Connection: The Pride benches along the Rockefeller north lawn and pride colored light poles along south and north esplanade will be installed. Happy Pride, BPC!
– Team Building & Beautification: BPCA welcomes corporate volunteer groups with helping hands! Groups can help with upkeep such as mulching and weeding throughout our parks. If your company is interested in planning a corporate volunteer day, please reach out to info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov for more information.
– Lend A Hand: Battery Park City Authority Horticulture team is looking for volunteers who would like to join us in completing gardening tasks like weeding, watering, and deadheading of plants. Please reach out to info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov for a volunteer application.
– Sow It Begins: We will be reseeding our native “no-mow” lawn planting at Murray Triangle.
– Hydration Collaboration: We will be watering our 30 hanging baskets and newly-planted trees three times per week to ensure optimal plant health for a long season of blooms until the end of October.
– Shear Genius: To improve tree health our Horticulture team will be performing tree pruning throughout BPC.
– What’s The Buzz: Celebrate Pollinator Week by participating in our “bioblitz” on Saturday, June 21, 2:00PM at the South Cove Bridge. We invite you to identify and share your observations of pollinators such as birds, bees, butterflies and other insects in the lush setting of South Cove’s Wild Area. Members of BPCA’s Horticulture team will be there to guide participants in observing the wildlife and documenting their observations using the iNaturalist app.
– Scraps Welcome: Starting June 17, there will be additional compost drop off locations located throughout BPC. Thank you for your compost contributions!
– Bugging Out: Spotted Lanternfly traps will be placed in select tree species in BPC to monitor and capture spotted lanternflies in their nymph stage before they reach adulthood.
– See Something, Say Something: We appreciate your feedback when you see something in the parks! Please share what you see and experience with info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov.
Sustainability at BPCA
– In April we composted 5,536 lbs. of food waste and 34.5 lbs. of dog waste from the community.
– Please remember to use our green compost bins to discard your food waste. And if you’re walking along the South Esplanade or in one of our three dog runs, help BPCA reach zero waste by composting your dog waste.
– Our community food compost drop-offs, located at 75 Battery Place, Gateway Plaza, 200 Rector, the lower level of River Terrace and Chambers Street and the Esplanade by North Cove Marina are open 24/7 for drop-off of food scraps for our compost program. Starting in June, the bins some bins will be relocated to within the park areas.
– Our Path to Zero! As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and please recycle or compost items.
