SUMMARY:Master Class with A. Van Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Although writers wrestle with how to end a poem as much as they fret over how to get started\, in this class we will discuss how the ending of a poem is often revealed along the way. We will talk about strategies for closing the poem\, and we will talk about why the ending is important. The ending of the poem doesn’t always mean that the poem is over or that it’s shut down; we will talk about the ways in which the poem opens up at the end. \nA. Van Jordan is The Henry Rutgers Presidential Professor at Rutgers University. He is the author of four collections of poems\, most recently The Cineaste (2013). His awards include a Whiting Writers Award and a Pushcart Prize. \nMaster Class Application Guidelines\nIn a single attachment\, email three poems accompanied by a cover sheet with your name\, address\, email address\, phone number\, and the name of class for which you are applying to classes@poetshouse.org. Poems must arrive by the designated deadline. No names or addresses should appear on the poems themselves.

SUMMARY:Myth into Modern Poetry with Antoinette Brim
DESCRIPTION:Myths of African\, Asian\, Greek\, and Roman origin are embedded in World literature\, not only as metaphor and moral\, but as a measure of humanity’s intrinsic faults or heroism. This workshop will explore timeless myths as a means to discuss modern political\, social and spiritual issues through poetry. Poets might consider the risk of flying too high or the folly of flying too low with Icarus. Poets might ask T’ao Ch’ien to lead the residents of Ferguson to the idyllic Peach Blossom Spring. What might happen if the Ngoma (spirit) of the murdered sought justice or Narcissus flowers took selfie sticks to the water’s edge? Workshop participants will mine both well-known and obscure myth for fresh images\, new strategies for form\, structure\, musicality\, and theme. \nAntoinette Brim\, author of Icarus in Love and Psalm of the Sunflower\, is a Cave Canem Foundation fellow\, a recipient of the Walker Foundation Scholarship to the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown\, and a Pushcart Prize nominee. Her poetry\, memoir and critical work have appeared in various anthologies\, journals and magazines. She is Assistant Professor of English at Capital Community College and has conducted poetry workshops for the Mark Twain House\, Women Writers in Bloom\, Hartford Loves Poetry and other organizations.

SUMMARY:Writing Your Obsession with Laura Sims
DESCRIPTION:Are you fascinated by Monarch butterflies? Dark matter? Funiculars? Politics? Medieval art? How do you go about translating that passionate interest onto the page? In this workshop\, we will explore how other poets have plumbed their passions—Maggie Nelson in Bluets\, Sawako Nakayasu in The Ants\, Takashi Hiraide in For the Fighting Spirit of the Walnut\, and Harryette Mullen in Sleeping with the Dictionary\, to name a few—and will mine our own new or longstanding obsessions to write a series of connected poems. We will try a variety of forms—from sonnets to collage poetry—and will play with lineation\, perspective\, and voice to approach the subject from as many angles as possible\, and to keep it fresh from poem to poem. \nLaura Sims is the author of three books of poetry: My god is this a man; Stranger; and Practice\, Restraint. She teaches creative writing\, composition\, and literature\, and is currently a faculty member at NYU and the Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop.

SUMMARY:Divine Ekphrasis: Reading Art\, Reading Self\, Reading Soul with Sharon Dolin
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the millennia\, poets have been inspired by the visual arts as a way into reading the self and soul. This workshop will explore figuration’s of the soul through our numinous encounters with the visual. How can we create a dialogue with the visual arts that triggers an introspection of the self? Ekphrasis may have its roots in the art of description\, but our focus will move beyond description into an enactment of Keatsian “soul-making.” Each poet is invited to choose a particular artist as their co-explorer on this journey\, to create a sequence of poems in conversation with the works of that artist. We’ll read a selection of ekphrastic texts by contemporary poets that deploy various strategies for creating this ekphrastic moment. \nSharon Dolin is the author of five books\, most recently Whirlwind and Burn and Dodge\, winner of the AWP Donald Hall Prize in Poetry. Serious Pink\, her groundbreaking ekphrastic collection in dialogue with abstract painting\, is being reissued this fall. Her sixth full-length book of poems\, Manual for Living\, which contains two ekphrastic sequences\, will be published in early 2016. She directs Writing About Art in Barcelona\, a ten-day writing workshop each June\, as well as the Center for Book Arts Annual Letterpress Poetry Chapbook Competition.

SUMMARY:Literary Adaptation: Writing Through Rewriting with Paul Legault
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, each writer will select a classic text to adapt and transform over the course of the six weeks\, while engaging with poems based on precursor texts\, and the precursors that provoked them. How can writing be a way of reading? How old is the ‘remix’? For inspiration\, we’ll discuss Shakespeare rewrites by Jen Bervin\, Harryette Mullen\, and June Jordan\, as well as Jack Spicer’s “Homage to Creeley\,” Rod Smith’s “Homage to Homage to Creeley\,” and Joshua Ware’s “Homage to Homage to Homage to Creeley\,” alongside many other literary sequels. \nPaul Legault is a Canadian-born poet and editor. His published collections include Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror 2 and The Emily Dickinson Reader: An English-to-English Translation of Emily Dickinson’s Complete Poems. With Rebecca Wolff\, he co-edits Fence Books. He has taught at the University of Virginia\, Fordham University\, and Washington University in St. Louis.

SUMMARY:Breaking Habits of Syntax with Donna Masini
DESCRIPTION:What are your syntactic habits and how do they constrict or limit where your poems will take you? If you can say “my poems always/ never…” (eg. are in first person\, start in present tense\, use complete sentences\, ask questions\, etc.) this session is an chance to see what happens when you try something new. We’ll look at poems\, experiment with various syntactic strategies\, and explore ways to move out of the familiar and generate drafts of new poems. To help us think about syntax and revision\, participants are encouraged to bring in a draft of a poem.

SUMMARY:Divine Ekphrasis: Reading Art\, Reading Self\, Reading Soul with Sharon Dolin
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the millennia\, poets have been inspired by the visual arts as a way into reading the self and soul. This workshop will explore figurations of the soul through our numinous encounters with the visual.

For inspiration\, we’ll discuss Shakespeare rewrites by Jen Bervin\, Harryette Mullen\, and June Jordan\, as well as Jack Spicer’s “Homage to Creeley\,” Rod Smith’s “Homage to Homage to Creeley\,” and Joshua Ware’s “Homage to Homage to Homage to Creeley\,” alongside many other literary sequels.”

SUMMARY:Master Class with Jerome Rothenberg
DESCRIPTION:From as far back as the Romans – as in other time & places\, everywhere – translation has served poets as another and very productive form of composition. This workshop will focus therefore on the ways in which this interactive process can be used in one’s own work\, with a nod to the instructor’s idea of “othering” and to Haroldo De Campos’s of “transcreation” – the reimagining or reinvention of texts from other poets. While working from a language other than English is both familiar and useful in this regard\, similarly interesting results can come from the translation of one poet’s English idiolect into another’s\, and that process (English to English) will be our principal focus in the present instance.

SUMMARY:Jerome Rothenberg on Outside and Subterranean Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, Jerome Rothenberg’s Barbaric Vast & Wild: An Assemblage of Outside & Subterranean Poetry from Origins to Present was published as the twelfth and culminating volume in his formative series on ethnopoetics\, begun nearly a half century ago with Technicians of the Sacred (1968).
