SUPERSTORM SANDY: A DECADE LATER

Ten years ago today Superstorm Sandy devastated New York City, resulting in the loss of 44 lives and $19 billion in damage. In the years since, with a wide range of government and community partners, the Battery Park City Authority has made great strides in protecting and hardening the neighborhood against the threats of storm surge and sea level rise – from the renovation and repair of historic Pier A, installation of water resistant streetlights, and elevation of the electrical infrastructure powering the NYC Police Memorial and part of the North Cove Marina, to protecting our treasured BPC Ball Fields and launch of the Authority’s comprehensive Sustainability Plan and Climate Action Plan.

This vital work continues, with two large-scale coastal resiliency initiatives now underway as part of New York City’s overall Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency initiative. Click here to read the latest from Acting BPCA Board Chair (and decades-long BPC resident) Martha Gallo on the Authority’s ongoing efforts to deliver a more resilient Battery Park City that’s built to last.
