Open space is essential in these challenging times, with Battery Park City’s green spaces providing welcome respite and relief to many. In late March 2020, BPCA began opening its park lawns on a rolling basis. Usually made accessible for the season in mid-April, this year’s early openings were aimed at facilitating social distancing and density reduction in Battery Park City’s public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Similarly, this fall BPCA has delayed fencing off its lawns until mid-December, from their usual mid-November closure.
To maintain access to these treasured open spaces, while also allowing the lawns time to heal after months of use, Rockefeller Park’s North Meadow and Wagner Park’s Terrace Lawn – two of Battery Park City’s largest and most popular lawns – will remain open to the public on a daily basis this winter, closing each day at dusk and during severe rain and other weather events.
(Reminder: While leashed pets are permitted on hard surfaces throughout Battery Park City, they are not permitted on parks lawns.)
As BPCA begins installing seasonal fencing around the neighborhood’s smaller lawns this week, users can enter these open areas of Rockefeller Park and Wagner Park through gates at the following locations:
– For Rockefeller Park North Meadow – openings at north, south, east, and west sides of lawn
– For Wagner Terrace – openings at east and west sides of lawn
