“From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable."
BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for April!
– Green Acres: Beginning April 15, our Parks Operations team will begin removing fencing around the neighborhood’s lawns and greenspaces closed for winter recuperation, in anticipation of the long season of enjoyment to come.
– Dig It: Installation of the volleyball mat at Esplanade Plaza on April 17 for another season of sets, spikes, and digs from our dedicated squad of pick-up game enthusiasts.
– Let it Flow: Also this month, our team will begin energizing the neighborhood’s park water fountains, irrigation, and water features.
– Moat Matters: Repair work on The Real World’s moat water feed and solenoid began late last month and should conclude by mid-April.
– Rodent Ramifications: Dry ice applications will be made throughout park areas for rat control purposes. This environmentally-friendly method minimizes contact with unintended targets like birds and squirrels that can be poisoned by traditional rodent control methods.
– Spring Sprouts: Beginning mid month our team will be receiving this year’s perennials and shrubs at the – recently upgraded! –North End Avenue nursery for planting in the gardens throughout Battery Park City.
– If You Ain’t Got That Swing: Repair work on the Rockefeller Park playground swings will be scheduled this month, with planned closures shared via our social media channels.
– Southern Prune: During the week of April 7, our Horticulture team will be using a boom lift to conduct tree pruning in BPC’s south neighborhood. This task is a weather dependent task and may include closing off select sections for public safety.
– Striking Out Bird Strikes: And ICYMI, in time for the spring migration season the public restrooms at Teardrop Park (located in The Solaire building on River Terrace between Murray & Warren streets) now display temporary window applications to decrease bird window collisions. Decals and decorative white paint break up reflected images of nearby trees and shrubs that birds sometimes fly into as they seek shelter and food. Read more about this initiative here.
– Tree Time: In honor of Arbor Day, BPCA Parks staff tagged our trees! These large tree tags can be found across BPC identifying various tree species and their positive impact on our environment. Check out this reel to see some of our tagged trees. As always, to learn about our trees everyday visit our TreePlotter!
