“From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable."
BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on for March!
High and Dry: BPCA Parks Operations staff members will be conducting flood barrier system deployment trainings across the property throughout the month of March into April. Community members may see staff setting up these systems; however, all deployments are strictly for internal training purposes. These training exercises are to help our team prepare in the event of an extreme flooding event.
Let It Melt: Large remaining snow mounds will continue to be addressed in our parks. Community members may observe our Parks Operations staff pushing, spreading, or breaking apart old snow to accelerate melting.
Concrete Thinking: As winter weather conditions improve and snow clears, our masonry crews will resume assessing outdoor pavement for repairs and looking for where brick paver restoration might be needed.
Pre-Spring Cleanings: With temperatures rising above freezing, Operations will increase wash-downs and detailed area cleanings in our parks.
Branch Manager: Look up and be mindful of the continued effort to perform annual tree pruning around Battery Park City to care for our urban tree canopy. Our Honey Locust trees in South Cove will be pruned as a part of annual maintenance to improve tree health.
Biodiversity
— On March 21 at 10AM, please join Horticulture’s Cristina Lalama and Programming’s Marieke Bender for the Spring Equinox Bilingual Nature Walk. This Spanish and English language event is the first of its kind in Battery Park City, organized in collaboration with Latino Outdoors. Participants will explore Rector Park to spot the first signs of spring and reflect on their deeper connections to the changing of the seasons. Through these reflections, participants will also have an opportunity to share and celebrate traditional cultural practices that mark the passage of time, bridging North and South America. To attend, please email: registration@bpca.ny.gov.
— We invite you to contribute pictures of wildlife and plants that you see in the park on the iNaturalist BPC Wildlife page!
— We appreciate your feedback when you see something in the parks! Please share what you see and experience with info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov.
— Battery Park City Authority Horticulture team is looking for volunteers in Spring 2026 who would like to join us in completing gardening tasks like weeding, watering, and deadheading of plants. Please email info@bpca.ny.gov for our volunteer form.
Sustainability at BPCA
— In January, we composted 2,394 pounds of food waste, and 23 pounds of dog waste from the community. Thanks to everyone that participates in our community composting program!
— Our community food compost drop-off bins are open 24/7 and are located at: Wagner Park, 75 Battery Place, West Thames Park, Esplanade at Gateway Back Gate, Belvedere Plaza across from the Ferry Terminal, River Terrace across from Irish Hunger Memorial, Rockefeller Picnic Area, North End Avenue Dog Run South Entrance, Rockefeller The Real World, and North End Avenue Stuyvesant Lawn.
— This virtual tour on our YouTube page highlights how BPCA works to develop the sustainable features, projects, and practices that make Battery Park City an innovative model for urban climate action!
— Please remember to use our green compost bins to discard your dog waste. And if you’re walking along the South Esplanade or in one of our 3 dog runs, help BPCA reach zero waste by composting your dog waste.
— Our Path to Zero! As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and please recycle or compost items.
