“From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable."
BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on for November!
– Winterization Innovation: We will begin winterization work throughout the parks this month.
– Fenced In: Parks Operations staff will be installing fencing on select lawns in BPC in need of renovation beginning the week of November 17.
– Good Game: The volleyball net and matting have been removed for the winter season.
– Hangout Over: Our hanging basket plants along South End Avenue will be removed for the winter season, but don’t worry! The soil will be amended for use again in the Spring.
– Flower Power: Horticulture staff will be planting approximately 35,000 new bulbs to have our parks Spring ready.
– Hello Hydration: Newly planted trees will be watered twice a week to ensure success and longevity in our urban tree canopy. These trees were planted last month as part of the New York Power Authority’s Tree Power 2.0 grant program.
– Turn A New Leaf: Leaf pick-up and composting will continue in the month of November. BPCA staff will be collecting litter-free leaves for composting and mulching back into our garden beds. This reduces waste sent to landfills and provides gardens with a boost of organic matter fertilization.
– Branching out: BPCA Horticulture team will be assessing health of Bradford Pear trees along Rector Place, and selecting trees for removal and replacement for more appropriate species that are less prone to branch failure.
Biodiversity
– With Wagner Park newly reopened, we welcome the public to upload any pictures of wildlife to our BPC iNaturalist page. This data will help us establish a baseline for the biodiversity that call and will call the new park home.
Community Engagement
– We appreciate your feedback when you see something in the parks! Please share what you see and experience with info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov
Sustainability at BPCA
– In September, we composted 4,478 pounds of food waste, and 53 pounds of dog waste from the community.
– Check out our virtual sustainability tour! The tour highlights how BPCA works to develop the sustainable features, projects, and practices that make Battery Park City an innovative model for urban climate action.
– Please remember to use our green compost bins to discard your food waste. And if you’re walking along the South Esplanade or in one of our 3 dog runs, help BPCA reach zero waste by composting your dog waste.
– Our community food compost drop-off bins are open 24/7 and are located at: 75 Battery place office; South esplanade near Rector Place; West Thames near the artificial turf; Police Memorial area; Belvedere; River Terrace near IHM; Rockefeller Picnic Benches; The Real World in Rockefeller Park; NEA island across from Stuyvesant High school; and at the Ball Field Terrace.
– Our Path to Zero! As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and please recycle or compost items.
