“From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable."
In keeping with the Battery Park City Authority’s legacy of environmental leadership, please join us in celebrating Earth Month 2026! The Authority’s free programming in April includes several family-friendly events, including guided birding and nature walks, an opportunity to meet a beekeeper, the chance for kids to engineer artistic creations with recycled materials, and more.
– Friday, April 24, 11AM: City Nature Challenge Bioblitz (Wagner Park). Help conduct a “bioblitz,” where professional and citizen scientists work together to identify all the plant and animal specials in a specific area, and contribute to building a catalog of Battery Park City’s biodiversity.
In addition, at 4PM on Earth Day, April 22, BPCA will host Building a Greener Waterfront: The Story of Wagner Park, a panel discussion on the design, sustainability, and future of Battery Park City’s newly reopened waterfront park. The project incorporates landscape features and infrastructure designed to provide immediate risk reduction while enhancing the natural beauty of the waterfront. The new Wagner Pavilion also reflects a strong commitment to sustainability — with fully electrified and free of on-site combustion, the pavilion demonstrates how buildings can support a cleaner, more climate-conscious future. The panel will present and discuss how Wagner Park shows what a greener, more resilient waterfront can look like, and offer a tour of the park beforehand starting at 3PM. Panelists include:
– Joseph Sutkowi, Chief Waterfront Design Officer, Waterfront Alliance (Moderator) – Sarah Fisher Curtin, Director of Sustainability, Battery Park City Authority – Ruth Nervig, Partner, SiteWorks – Jean Phifer, Director, Thomas Phifer and Partners – Ben Shepherd, Director, Atelier Ten
