BPCA CELEBRATES EARTH MONTH 2026 WITH SCHEDULE OF FREE PUBLIC EVENTS

In keeping with the Battery Park City Authority’s legacy of environmental leadership, please join us in celebrating Earth Month 2026! The Authority’s free programming in April includes several family-friendly events, including guided birding and nature walks, an opportunity to meet a beekeeper, the chance for kids to engineer artistic creations with recycled materials, and more.

Tuesday, April 14, 11:00AM: Earth Day Family Birding (Rector Park). Join us to learn the basics of bird watching in this fun outing for beginners, hobbyists, and lifelong birders alike.

Tuesday, April 14, 4:15PM: Earth Month Compost Tour (75 Battery Place). Get a behind-the-scenes look at how BPCA processes the hundreds of pounds of food waste collected each day with its “Rocket” composters — waste which is then turned into compost for use in our gardens to support soil health. Registration recommended, please email registration@bpca.ny.gov.

Wednesday, April 15, 1:30PM: Meet the Beekeeper (Rockefeller Park). Learn about the importance of urban beekeeping and its benefit to sustainability efforts in Battery Park City and across the five boroughs.

Thursday, April 16 10:30AM: Earth Month Nature Walk (Rockefeller Park). Take a stroll through the park with BPCA’s outdoor educator Marieke Bender and explore our connection to the great outdoors!

Friday, April 24, 11AM: City Nature Challenge Bioblitz (Wagner Park). Help conduct a “bioblitz,” where professional and citizen scientists work together to identify all the plant and animal specials in a specific area, and contribute to building a catalog of Battery Park City’s biodiversity.

Saturday, April 25, 10:30AM: S.T.E.A.M. Dream Event (Rockefeller Park). Kids are invited to pick up S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) at this special open air fair. The event will feature a variety of engaging activities and special guests.

In addition, at 4PM on Earth Day, April 22, BPCA will host Building a Greener Waterfront: The Story of Wagner Park, a panel discussion on the design, sustainability, and future of Battery Park City’s newly reopened waterfront park. The project incorporates landscape features and infrastructure designed to provide immediate risk reduction while enhancing the natural beauty of the waterfront. The new Wagner Pavilion also reflects a strong commitment to sustainability — with fully electrified and free of on-site combustion, the pavilion demonstrates how buildings can support a cleaner, more climate-conscious future. The panel will present and discuss how Wagner Park shows what a greener, more resilient waterfront can look like, and offer a tour of the park beforehand starting at 3PM. Panelists include:

– Joseph Sutkowi, Chief Waterfront Design Officer, Waterfront Alliance (Moderator)
– Sarah Fisher Curtin, Director of Sustainability, Battery Park City Authority
– Ruth Nervig, Partner, SiteWorks
– Jean Phifer, Director, Thomas Phifer and Partners
– Ben Shepherd, Director, Atelier Ten
