COMMUNITY NOTICE: TEMPORARY STREET & TUNNEL CLOSURES, SEPTEMBER 27-28, 2025

Closures in Support of Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk

In support of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Annual 5K Run & Walk, and at the direction of our partners at the New York City Police Department, please be advised of the following local street closures for the weekend of September 28-29, 2024. Closures apply to vehicular traffic only; motorists are advised to allow for additional travel time and consider an alternate route.

The 2025 Tunnel to Towers 5K will take place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, from 9:30AM to 2:00PM. Approximately 30,000 participants will gather in Brooklyn beginning at 6:00AM before running through the Hugh L. Carey (HLC) Tunnel into Manhattan, symbolizing Stephen Siller’s (FDNY) final run from the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. The post-run festival on Vesey Street will run from 10:20AM until approximately 1:30PM.

Saturday, September 27:

– One tube of the HLC Tunnel will be closed from 10:00PM Saturday, September 27, through 7:00AM on Sunday, September 28. One lane will be open in both directions in the remaining tube during this time.

– Additionally, beginning at 6:30AM on Sunday, September 28, there will be no access to the Manhattan-bound HLC Tunnel from local streets in Brooklyn. Access to the Manhattan-bound HLC Tunnel from Brooklyn will only be available via the Gowanus Expressway until 7:00AM.

– Vesey Street from West Street to North End Avenue, and parts of North End Avenue from Vesey Street to Murray Street will begin closing at midnight.

Sunday, September 28 (times/closures subject to change as determined by NYPD):

– 7AM: NYPD closes southbound West Street at Canal Street to Liberty Street

– 7AM: There will be no access to the Manhattan-bound HLC Tunnel from local streets in Brooklyn. Access to the Manhattan-bound HLC Tunnel from Brooklyn will only be available via the Gowanus Expressway until 7:30AM. Tunnel remains closed to vehicular traffic until conclusion of event (approx. 1PM).

– 7AM: Anticipated Street Closures:
• Northbound West Street from the HLC to Liberty Street
• South End Avenue from Liberty to Albany
• Murray Street from River Terrace to West Street
• North End Avenue from Vesey Street to Warren Street
• Warren from River Terrace to West Street
• West Street: Closed at the discretion of NYPD. Estimated southbound closures from 7am – 2pm and northbound from 8AM-noon.

– 1PM: Estimated re-opening of HLC Tunnel

– 2PM: Estimated re-opening of West Street

– 2-6PM: Final clean up by NYC Department of Sanitation. Vesey Street re-opens upon completion of sweep.
