Fourth Annual Pumpkin Composting Program Runs Through November 19
Four gourd and several years ago, our Parks Operations team brought forth in Battery Park City a new notion, conceived in sustainability, and dedicated to the proposition that all pumpkins can be composted. Beginning today, BPCA is once again accepting pumpkins as part of its annual Operation Pumpkin Drop – simply leave your pumpkins in the gray bins at any of the five locations below and they’ll be sustainably composted and used to create a quality soil fertilizer.
Drop Off Locations:
o Outside 75 Battery Place
o West Thames Playground
o Esplanade Plaza
o North End Avenue Dog Run
o Irish Hunger Memorial
After the composting process is complete, these nutrients will be returned to BPC’s gardens to help improve our soil fertility. BPCA will be collecting the pumpkins through Wednesday, November 19.
Over the past three years, the Authority has collected more than 2,250 pounds of pumpkin. This material, along with fruits, vegetables, tea bags/leaves, coffee grounds/filters, and spent flowers left by the community as part of BPCA’s year-round community compost program, help BPCA’s leading sustainability efforts by diverting the amount of waste sent to landfill.
