More than 400 Programs and Events Open to All
Fresh off a summer season that saw more than 30,000 visitors to hundreds of community events, the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) today released its Fall 2017 Parks Programming Calendar. The calendar details more than 400 public programs and events taking place throughout Battery Park City from September to December. The full schedule of mostly-free programs – including concerts, movie nights, storytelling, exercise, art and nature tours, and more – has been mailed to all Battery Park City Parks mailing list subscribers and should start arriving in mailboxes next week. It can also be accessed online.

From movies, music and art, to workshops, tours and more, our 2017 Fall Events Calendar has hundreds of free offerings for kids from one to ninety-two. So come join us for free flicks in Rockefeller Park or Go Fish! at Wagner Park. Enjoy the sounds of Dockappella to start your October and seasonal music and sweets at our traditional Holiday Lights celebration. There’s something for everyone here in Battery Park City, and I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood!”
The Fall 2017 Events Calendar includes nearly 20 pages of illustrated program offerings, organized by those of interest to guests of all ages, teens and adults, school-aged kids, and pre-schoolers. It also includes a map of key Battery Park City locations, contact information for reserving the BPC Ball Fields and community event space at 6 River Terrace, as well as details about the BPC Community Center at Stuyvesant High School, which features fitness classes, access to a weight room, dance studio, and heated half-Olympic-sized pool, as well as two basketball courts and special event and party rental space.
Highlights of the Fall 2017 Events Calendar include:
Special Teen Night: DJ Workshop – Friday, September 8, 4-7PM, 6 River Terrace. Check out the skills of a master DJ and try your own hand at this free performance and workshop. DJ provided by Rock and Soul DJ Equipment and Records.
Go Fish! – Select Saturdays (9/9, 9/23, 10/14), 10am-2PM, Wagner Park. Join experienced anglers for catch-and release fishing and learn about life in the Hudson River with the following educational tours for all ages:
– September 9 & October 14 @ 11am // Birdwatching – New York City is a fantastic place to observe birds, especially during the fall migration season. The gardens of Wagner Park create a unique niche for these fascinating creatures. Join our naturalist / horticulturist team as we look for birds and learn about the plantings and flowers.
– September 23, 11am-noon // Birds of Prey – Blue Moon Raptors is dedicated to rehabilitating injured and orphaned birds of prey in order to return them back to the wild as well as educating the public about the important roles these animals play in local ecosystems. Come to this informative talk and get an opportunity to meet some of their taloned friends.
– September 23, 11am // Garden Tour – Wagner Park’s Cool and Hot Gardens provide a contemplative space with unsurpassed views and hundreds of types of plants in Listen to a horticulturist explain the innovative and sustainable methods used throughout the parks of Battery Park City.
Then at noon, special music guests include:
– September 9 // Grammy Award winner Dan Zanes & Friends perform traditional acoustic folk music with a modern twist. Featuring songs from his latest release Lead Belly, Baby!, Dan and Friends provide a fresh vision of the American icon’s music for a new generation.
– September 23 // Key Wilde & Mr. Clarke have released four highly-acclaimed recordings celebrating a variety of styles ranging from surf to bluegrass with an emphasis on guitars and vocal harmonies. Their original, upbeat, humorous songs delight both kids and the older folks who tag along with them.
– October 14 // The Crusty Gentlemen – Born under the Brooklyn Bridge in 2010 and embodying the “crustiness” that comes from years of experience, this local bluegrass favorite plays tunes to keep your feet tapping and bait wiggling.
Friday Movie Nights at Rockefeller Park. Join us under the stars for free screenings of these great feature films:
– September 15, 7:30PM // Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Set 70 years before the famous Harry Potter began his education at Hogwarts, this tale follows the adventures of another wizard and his remarkable collection of spectacular creatures. Don’t forget your wand!
– October 13, 7:00PM // Ghostbusters – Enjoy this spooky classic on Friday the 13th and get ready to be slimed! Join your favorite, quirky band of parapsychologists as they rid the Big Apple of ghosts, ghouls, and other paranormal phenomena. When there’s something strange, you know who to call…
Young Artists’ Workshop: Bookmaking – Saturday, September 30, 11am, Rockefeller Park. Children are invited to make their own illustrated books with artist/educator Elise Engler, who will introduce the children to a variety of simple book making formats and techniques including accordion and pop-up books. Everyone will leave with their own story, told through drawn or painted pictures bound in a wonderful hand-made book. All materials provided.
Dockappella – Sunday, October 1, 1-4PM, Wagner Park. Join us for our annual autumn celebration of intricately-woven harmonies along the Hudson River. Many of the finest college acappella groups in New York and beyond will showcase their pitch-perfect vocal renditions from a diverse variety of musical genres. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch as you enjoy the music with New York Harbor and Statue of Liberty as backdrop!
Public Art Tour: Irish Hunger Memorial – Saturday, October 28, 2PM. Join Brian Tolle, designer of the Irish Hunger Memorial, on a special tour of this newly-reopened Battery Park City landmark. Brian will discuss the history of the memorial, as well as the recent renovation of the work. A staff horticulturalist will be on hand to discuss the Memorial’s native Irish plantings.
Stories for all Ages – Saturday, October 29, 11am, Rockefeller Park. Celebrate Halloween by listening to some “not-too-scary” tales, vividly told by the delightful and engaging storyteller Luann Adams. Wear your Halloween costume!
Holiday Lights – Thursday, December 7, 5:45PM, South Cove. An annual Battery Park City tradition! Join us for this annual a cozy evening in South Cove with caroling, warm beverages, cookies, and the local community. Donate a gift to Stockings with Care by bringing a new, unwrapped gift to the event. You may also drop off gift donations through December 15, at BPC Parks Headquarters (75 Battery Place).
