One of lower Manhattan’s outdoor treasures, the BPC
Esplanade runs the entire length of Battery Park City, along the Hudson River
from Stuyvesant High School on the north end to The
Battery on the south. Forming a vertical waterside protective element
below the Esplanade, its “curtain wall” also runs the full length, preventing
garbage and other debris from washing underneath it.
The Esplanade Curtain Wall Repair Project, beginning this
week, entails cleaning
and repairing the
curtain wall and its components for the first time in decades. It
includes removal of dirt, dust, marine growth, etc., as well as the repair of cracks and
spalling and the replacement of deteriorated rebar and expansion joint material in
the curtain wall. A work barge (pictured) will be docked parallel to the
Esplanade and move along its length to achieve these repairs, scheduled to run
through November 2019.
The work associated with this project should not generate substantial amounts of noise and will occur only during citywide construction hours of 7am-6PM on weekdays.
