BPC PARKS HAPPENINGS: MAY 2025

BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on for May!

– You’ve Got the Cool Water: Park water features and drinking fountains will be turned on this month, with children’s playground water features activated by Memorial Day weekend.

– Rack ‘Em Up: Our new pool tables have arrived! Parks operations staff is aiming to get them installed by end of May.

– On The Clock: The parks operations maintenance team has begun working their longer daily shift on May 1. From now through October 31, the Irish Hunger Memorial and the public restrooms at Teardrop Park will be open daily until 9PM.

– Helping Hands: Volunteer Season has begun! The Battery Park City Authority horticulture team is looking for volunteers who would like to join us in completing gardening tasks like weeding, watering, and deadheading of plants. Please reach out to info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov for a volunteer application.

– Blooming Baskets: Thirty-two hanging baskets will be installed along South End Avenue with flowering annual displays for a long season of blooms from May through October.

– Ephemeral Euphoria: The gardens are blooming with ephemerals, which flower early and go dormant as the weather warms up. They bloom in response to light and warmth, are pollinated, and produce seed during a small window of time between snow melt and leaf out of trees. As some of the earliest flowers to emerge, ephemeral wildflowers are an important food source for bees and other pollinators.

– Flower Power: Stop and Smell the Flowers! Enjoy NYC Wildflower Week, running through May 11, by taking a self-guided wildflower walk through Teardrop Park and the BPC Ball Fields Terrace.

Sustainability at BPCA

– In March we composted 8,705 lbs. of food waste and 34.5 lbs. of dog waste from the community.

 – Please remember to use our green compost bins to discard your food waste. And if you’re walking along the South Esplanade or in one of our 3 dog runs, help BPCA reach zero waste by composting your dog waste.

Our community food compost drop-offs, located at 75 Battery Place, Gateway Plaza, 200 Rector, the lower level of River Terrace and Chambers Street and the Esplanade by North Cove Marina are open 24/7 for drop-off of food scraps for our compost program.

Our Path to Zero! As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and please recycle or compost items.
