YOUNG SPROUTS GARDENING
A wonderful opportunity for little gardeners and their accompanying adults to get a bug's-eye-view of the world! Join us as we read stories about the life within our garden beds and then head into the Children’s Garden to water, dig, and admire the plants and flowers all around us! Together, we will observe the changing seasons and learn about the pollinators and other insects who help our plants thrive. Gardening is a great introduction to teaching us how to care for the environment.

Discover the fun and rewards of tending a garden. Plant annuals and native perennials, and take part in watering, weeding, composting, and other green gardening practices. Learn how our resilient garden provides food for pollinating insects and birds. Fun nature studies and art projects will augment the program. For children who love nature and like to get dirty! This BPC park offers a unique setting to observe and sketch the human figure. Each week a model will strike short and long poses for participants to draw. An artist/educator will offer constructive suggestions and critique. Drawing materials provided, and artists are encouraged to bring their own favorite media.

Namaste! Unwind from the day with outdoor yoga. Immerse yourself in this meditative practice- surrounded by the Hudson’s peaceful aura. Elise Engler’s book, A Diary of the Plague Year: An Illustrated Chronicle of 2020, is one year of a daily drawing/painting project that lasted from late 2015 to President Biden’s inauguration in January, 2021. Made each morning from the first headlines she heard from her bedside radio, Engler’s vibrant immediate images recapture what it was like to live through 2020- bringing texture, feeling, and even charm to what we might not remember and what we will never forget.

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, BPCA presents Kikujiro (1999, Takeshi Kitano). Based on The Wizard of Oz, a young, naive boy sets out alone to find his wayward mother. Soon he finds an unlikely protector in a crotchety man and the two have a series of unexpected adventures along the way. Free popcorn will be served, and a discussion will follow the screenings. The American architect and sculptor Maya Lin became famous when her anonymous entry won the competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Continuing the Young Architects Series, learn more about Maya through a read-aloud of Maya Lin: Artist-Architect of Light and Lines by Jeanne Walker Harvey. Then create collages of your own, envisioning landscapes that you would want to design someday.
