“From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable."
BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on for February!
sNOw WAY: Our team stays prepared for winter weather conditions by continuously training with snow removal equipment. Read more about the Authority’s sustainable snow operations here. In the event of snow, expect closures in certain areas of the parks such as the South Cove crown and jetty bridge, Wagner Pavilion rooftop, and portions of Teardrop Park.
Know Your Roots: We are removing granite pavers around the tree beds along Battery Place to West Thames on the Eastern Border Promenade. This is to allow space for healthy tree root growth and to level out pavers that have lifted from cramped root growth.
Heavy Machinery Alert: BPCA has a new class of trainees preparing along the eastern border to operate our heavy equipment such as Bobcats and Tool Cats. This training helps our staff better care for all our parks.
Un-deck The Halls: Thank you to everyone who participated in Christmas tree recycling. This year, we chipped more than 1,600 trees! The resulting wood chips will be put to good use throughout the parks, with some applied directly as mulch in garden beds and others used as a carbon source for composting. Your participation helps support a sustainable program that nourishes the trees, flowers, and plants across BPC.
Field Notes: With Wagner Park newly reopened, we welcome the public to upload any pictures of wildlife to our BPC iNaturalist page. This data will help us establish a baseline for the biodiversity that call and will call the new park home.
On The Lookout: We appreciate your feedback when you see something in the parks! Please share what you see and experience with info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov
Spring Forward: The Battery Park City Authority Horticulture team is looking for volunteers in Spring 2026 who would like to join us in completing gardening tasks like weeding, watering, and deadheading of plants. Please email info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov for our volunteer form.
Biodiversity and Sustainability in BPC
– In December, we composted 2,343 pounds of food waste, and 49 pounds of dog waste from the community. For 2025, in total we composted 56,106 pounds of food waste, and 586 pounds of dog waste. Thanks to everyone that participates in our community composting program!
– This virtual tour on our YouTube page highlights how BPCA works to develop the sustainable features, projects, and practices that make Battery Park City an innovative model for urban climate action!
– Please remember to use our green compost bins to discard your dog waste. And if you’re walking along the South Esplanade or in one of our 3 dog runs, help BPCA reach zero waste by composting your dog waste.
– Our community food compost drop-off bins are open 24/7 and are located at: Wagner Park, 75 Battery Place, West Thames Park, Esplanade at Gateway Back Gate, Belvedere Plaza across from the Ferry Terminal, River Terrace across from Irish Hunger Memorial, Rockefeller Picnic Area, North End Avenue Dog Run South Entrance, Rockefeller The Real World, and North End Avenue Stuyvesant Lawn.
– Our Path to Zero! As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and please recycle or compost items.
