BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for January!
– Paver Pluck: As part of its comprehensive Sustainability Plan, Battery Park City aims to have nearly half of its parks and public open spaces be permeable by 2030. Permeable pavements and green stormwater infrastructure can help to reduce flooding risks by providing opportunities for stormwater to infiltrate or slow down runoff, while also filtering and cleaning this runoff through green infrastructure. To that end, the Authority’s permeable paver pilot project is now underway at the South Cove cul-de-sac, where Belgian block cobblestones are being replaced with permeable material.
– Dapper Doors: The BPC Ball Field’s bathroom doors will be sanded and repainted for the season ahead. Check the open play hours at the fields here for January and February.
– Looking Chipper: Battery Park City’s annual tree recycling program is underway! Simply leave your unadorned tree curbside – no stands, lights, ornaments, or tinsel, please – through January 27 for pickup so our Parks Operations team can safely chip them into mulch for use in our parks.
– Rat Remediation: As a part of BPCA’s integrated pest management approach, our Parks Operations team will begin its latest round of dry ice applications in rat burrows throughout the neighborhood. This environmentally-friendly method helps reduce the rodent population without affecting non-target organisms like birds or squirrels.
– Proactive Pruning: The Parks Operations team will begin its winter tree pruning efforts, using the boom lift to ensure the health and safety of our tree canopy.
– With Spring in Sight: To ensure our parks and public spaces boast the best quality and availability of plants for the 2023, we’re in the process of securing plants for the spring planting season.
– Winning with Zero Waste: As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask as always that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and if possible please recycle or compost items.
