BPC: DID YOU KNOW? | BAT SHELTER TRIAL

Battery Park City’s 36 acres of parks and public space are a treasure enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors each year. To keep these places beautiful our horticultural staff works to constantly to diversify the plant species in Battery Park City – particularly native plants that provide shelter and sustained food sources for local and migratory fauna.

To support longer stays for this fauna, including a number bat species, BPCA ran a bat shelter trail during the month of April. These flying mammals are increasingly common in parks throughout New York City, and in addition to being fascinating to study bats also act as a natural means of controlling insects – especially mosquitoes!

While no bats made homes in these shelters this season, we will continue to explore options to support visiting and migratory species in the seasons to come.

Stay tuned for future updates as we continue to increase the ecological diversity of Battery Park City!
