Every artwork has a story!
In addition to its expertly maintained parks and public spaces, BPCA manages a world-renowned 20th and 21st century collection of large-scale sculptures and environmental installations integrated with its 92-acre, lower Manhattan residential neighborhood. Beginning with the Battery Park City Fine Arts Program in the mid-1980s, the Authority has commissioned artists through competitive selection processes and with advisement from curators and art experts of diverse backgrounds and specializations.
In 2022, BPCA launched its popular “Public Art on Video” series. Inspired by informal conversations with the artists about their the creative process and inspiration for their works in their own words, and by the visitors who regularly engage with this world-famous art in our parks, the series explores public art in Battery Park City’s urban landscape and the impact of experiencing art without walls.
New, physical signage has now been installed next to pieces in BPC’s permanent art collection to offer quick access to these videos by scanning the QR code, offering a deeper dive into the neighborhood’s treasured public art collection. The signs help make our art even more accessible and highlight each artists’ unique contribution to the past and present of Battery Park City.
As we look forward to the re-opening of Wagner Park later this summer, you’ll soon see additional signs with cherished works such as Eyes and Resonating Bodies in their new permanent home.
Thank you so much to the artists for enriching public spaces in Battery Park City!
