BPC PEOPLE

Patrick Murphy
Title: Account Manager/BPC Ambassadors
Favorite BPC spot: Wagner Park

A native New Yorker, Patrick Murphy was raised in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx and  went on to study economics and philosophy at Iona College in New Rochelle, motivated by  his interest in the economy and its affect on the stock market. But it was a different interest that would come to define his career. During college, Pat worked as a manager in a movie theater, and after graduation took New York City’s civil service exam to become a police officer. He started in a South Bronx Precinct with the NYPD performing uniform and plain-clothes patrol. Pat went on to serve with the Organized Crime Control Bureau, Public Morals Division and Policy Enforcement Task Force in both plainclothes and undercover. Pat was then promoted to Detective and assigned to the Detective Bureau, Queens Division, as well as the Forensic Investigation Division, Crime Scene Unit over the course of a distinguished, 20-year career. During this time he also returned to school to earn a Master’s degree in criminal justice at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where he later served as an adjunct professor. After retiring from the force, Pat took a position in security at JFK International Airport and worked with the Port Authority to establish post-9/11 security systems.

Pat then looked to broaden his horizons and take on challenges in the private sector. He lent his expertise to the Museum of Modern Art during construction and then as a security supervisor. He then worked for a major cosmetics company as North American manager of security for supply chain and trademark protection, which included ensuring the safety of employees, products, and worksites. He set up the company’s security infrastructure in Canada as it expanded, and drew on his experience in the NYPD to assist the Royal Canadian police force in cracking down on counterfeit goods.

After his time in Canada, Mr. Murphy moved into private security with AlliedBarton Security Services, one of the country’s premier private security firms. His first position with AlliedBarton was running security for the Atlas Mall in Queens, which brought him back to the New York City area. Soon after taking that position an opportunity to be an Account Manager opened here in Battery Park City, which he saw as a unique opportunity to interact with the community and respond directly to its needs.

From his first job at the movie theater to today, Pat Murphy prides himself on responsiveness, attentiveness, and face-to-face communication to solve issues for the people he serves. And these efforts have paid off – his favorite part of the job is receiving positive feedback from the Battery Park City community, and seeing the peace of mind and safety that his work provides. Some recent projects in Battery have involved assisting at school crossings, reducing skateboarding in crowded areas, and assisting in the successful America’s Cup World Series event. Under Murphy’s leadership, AlliedBarton has actively engaged with community organizations, sponsoring two little league teams and forging a strong partnership with the Battery Park City Authority.

Pat resides in Garden City in Nassau County, and enjoys going out east to explore Long Island in his free time. He also enjoys fixing things around the house and working with his hands. He has three adult children, who are pursuing respective careers in the Coast Guard, education, and entertainment. His favorite location in Battery Park City is Wagner Park, where he loves the views of the Hudson River and Statue of Liberty.

Aviva Blumberg was born in Warsaw in 1931. Aviva lived with her mother and sisters. Her father was a journalist who left to work in the U.S. in 1940. Just before the Warsaw ghetto uprising, Aviva was given to a stranger whom her mother had met casually. The family took the child as an act of defiance against the Nazis and also because they needed the money provided by the Jewish underground to care for the child. After the Polish uprising in Warsaw, Aviva was deported with the family who was hiding her. After they were liberated, she managed to get in touch with a family friend who immediately contacted her father, who had been searching for his family. Aviva came to America in 1945.
