TRAVEL ADVISORY: SOUTH BATTERY PARK CITY RESILIENCY PROJECT

Beginning Monday, April 28, night work will be performed at several locations along West Street / Route 9A between Albany Street and Battery Place, pictured above, including one location on the adjacent bike lane. This work is necessary to improve the sewer system by installing watertight manhole covers, watertight access hatches, and sluice gates.

The work will begin at West Street and Rector Place, before moving south down West Street toward Battery Place. Work at each location is anticipated to take one week. For the work on the bike lane, cyclists will be rerouted around the work site. Flaggers will be on-site and signs will be posted. During daytime hours, the work site will be covered so that cyclists can use the lane.

Work will take place from 9PM to 5AM Monday through Friday. As a result, traffic will be reduced by one to two lanes. The noisiest work will be the demolition of the roadway, which will involve the use of jackhammers and is expected to take 1–3 nights at each location.

The South Battery Park City Resiliency Project (SBPCR) represents one of several projects within the overall Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) Master Plan. SBPCR is a BPCA capital project designed to provide flood risk reduction for Battery Park City and Lower Manhattan in response to increasingly frequent and more severe storms. More information about SBPCR can be found at https://bpca.ny.gov/sbpcrp/.
