BPC PARKS HAPPENINGS: AUGUST 2022

BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for August!

A new coat: BPCA’s Parks Operations staff will be re-applying essential oil coating on the wood of the NYC Police Memorial mechanical rooms.

ICYMI: The newly-expanded Memorial recently reopened to the public.

Fly by: On Wednesday, August 10, Battery Park City’s beekeeper will be visiting our hive in Rockefeller Park to do a routine health check on the bees and to begin preparing the hive for harvest.

Fall in: New native perennials, trees, and shrubs have been ordered for a fall delivery and planting.

Tragic beauty: Staff will be installing 24 more spotted lanternfly traps on trees throughout Battery Park City’s parks. These traps are monitored weekly to gather data and guide our pest management efforts.

Break it down: Annuals ordered for fall planting will be delivered in compostable “EcoPots” to reduce waste.

Zero Waste Goals: As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you are bringing into the parks, and if it can’t be reused please recycle or compost items if possible.

For our part, we’ll keep watching and adjusting the recycling cans to ensure they are in the right places for optimal use and updating signage on landfill and recycling cans throughout the open spaces.

This month, a member of the BPCA’s Zero Waste Advisory Committee will visit the following BPCA Parks Programming events to help spread the word about Zero Waste:

o Children’s Gardening Club
o Young Sprouts Gardening
o Preschool Art
o Thursday Art in Rockefeller
