BPC BALL FIELDS RESILIENCY — PUBLIC MEETING SUMMARY

On March 21, BPCA and Manhattan Community Board 1 jointly hosted BPC Ball Fields Public Resiliency Project Public Meeting #2. The group had a productive dialogue that evening about the locations and types of protective measures that might be used to harden the fields in the face of coming storms.

“I want to thank you all for working hard on this, for including us in the process, and for wanting to do what’s best for everybody,” said William Rogers of Downtown Soccer League. “I can’t thank you enough. This really means a lot to us.”

Notably, the group also discussed focusing more on temporary measures that may be employed to minimize construction-related usage interruptions to the many organizations, and more than 50,000 local youth, who use these treasured community assets each year.

Accordingly, BPCA and its design firm, STV, will be shifting to a design approach that contemplates an interim, rather than permanent, solution to storm surge flooding at the BPC Ball Fields; this to offer protection to the fields in advance of the more comprehensive protection realized upon completion of the North & South Battery Park City Resiliency Projects in the coming years. Permanent storm water drainage improvements will remain part of the project.

Updates on this work will be included as part of the next BPC Ball Fields Resiliency Project public meeting, at a date TBD later this spring.

Presentation and video from the March 21 meeting are posted to the Resiliency page of BPCA’s website, and are linked as follows:

We look forward to continuing this important work together.
