BPCA MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF HURRICANE SANDY

Since Superstorm Sandy struck New York City in October 2012, resulting in more than fifty lives lost, millions of traumatized residents, and billions of dollars in property damage, BPCA has been hard at work developing a comprehensive approach to resiliency, aimed at protecting Battery Park City’s people, property, and infrastructure from the ravages of storm surge and sea level rise.

In keeping with Battery Park City’s first-ever strategic plan, and in close consultation with a wide range of government and community partners, these efforts continue today. Our resiliency infrastructure projects – at the BPC Ball Fields, and in the south, north, and west of Battery Park City – are progressing, with underwater work beginning on the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project kicking off last month, and at the BPC Ball Fields in 2021.

This is in addition to our already-completed work to repair and harden vulnerable areas throughout the neighborhood – from relocation above the flood zone of electrical infrastructure powering he NYC Police Memorial and south side of the North Cove Marina, resilient turf and elevated electric equipment at the BPC Ball Fields, wet flood proofing of the historic Pier A, and upgrading to water-resistant street lighting, to manually-installed flood protection measures at the West Thames Bridge and Ball Fields.

Completed projects to repair and harden BPC assets include work at the NYC Police Memorial, BPC Ball Fields, Pier A Harbor House, and on neighborhood streetlights.
TOP: Temporary flood protection measures at the BPC Ball Fields, known as “Muscle Walls,” were installed for the start of storm season in early August.

BOTTOM: Elevators the West Thames Street Bridge were shut down as a precautionary measure on Tuesday August 4, in anticipation of Tropical Storm Isaiahs, and their flood barriers deployed by the BPCA Parks Operations team.

This year, as we mark another solemn anniversary, we look forward to furthering this vital and collaborative work in 2021 and beyond.
